HYMENOPLASTY OVERVIEW

Hymen reconstruction surgery aims to give women a second virginity. The hymen can be deflowered during sexual practices, but also during sports activities. Sometimes, the hymen breaks without pain or bleeding. The patient may then regret not having fully experienced her first time and seek to live this experience more intensely. However, most often, hymenoplasty is requested in a traditional setting, when religion, culture and family pressure impose virginity on future brides.

PROCEDURE OF THE HYMEN RESTORATION SURGERY

In order to prepare for the operation in the best possible conditions, an initial gynecological consultation allows us to understand the operation's implications, identify the best reconstruction technique for the patient and study any possible contraindications. This appointment is also an opportunity to inform the patient of some simple and crucial preoperative instructions to ensure the hymen heals properly, including: stopping smoking (30 days before hymenoplasty) and stopping aspirin and related medications (7 days before).
The procedure itself lasts 30 minutes, under local anesthesia. The patient can go home the same day and take a shower the next day. However, she will have to avoid any intense physical activity, hammam sessions or sexual intercourse for a month in order to give the hymen time to heal properly.

CONTRAINDICATIONS TO HYMEN RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY:

Contraindications to hymenoplasty surgery are:
  • Smoking
  • Taking aspirin or anti-inflammatories (relative contraindication, to be avoided during the 7 days before the procedure)
  • Heart or respiratory problems
  • Unstable diabetes
  • History of allergy to products used during anesthesia
